Jesus does not wait for later followers to invent a meaning for His death. Before the crucifixion, He takes bread and cup and interprets what is about to happen.
He Knows the Death Ahead.
Betrayal is announced within the meal. Jesus is not speaking as someone unaware of the danger around Him; He deliberately places His approaching death before the disciples.
He Gives Himself for Others.
“Poured out for many” reveals a mission directed toward others. The cross will involve violence done to Jesus, yet Jesus also speaks of His life as deliberately given.
He Connects Death and Forgiveness.
Forgiveness of sins stands at the center of His explanation. Jesus presents His death as addressing humanity’s relationship with God, not merely inspiring moral courage.
He Looks Beyond the Cross.
Jesus speaks of drinking anew in His Father’s kingdom. The One interpreting His death also speaks beyond it, holding sacrifice and future hope together in the same meal.
Tomorrow, face the assumption that the cross can be understood adequately without the saving meaning Jesus gives it.
Consider this.
